Wedding Destinations: Martinique
Description of Martinique
Martinique is considered the flagship of French culture in the
Caribbean. It is a typical Caribbean island with its waterfalls,
tropical forests, lush green mountainsides, a dormant volcano, and
a desert of petrified wood. The picturesque flowers include hibiscus,
bougainvillea, frangipani, and wild orchids. The white-sand beaches
on the southern coast and the volcanic silver-blue-sand beaches
on the northern coast are part of the variety of the landscape.
The Atlantic side of the island is rough and rugged with hidden
coves of sand and smoother waters. The sheltered shores starting
on the southern tip of the island are where most of the top resorts
and best beaches are located.
Fort-de-France with its narrow streets lined with pastel-colored
houses and lacy wrought-iron balconies will immediately remind Americans
of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Most vacationers here are
from Europe.
Water sports are prevalent on Martinique, but windsurfing may
be the most popular. The mountainous interior makes it one of the
best for ecotourism, hiking and mountain climbing.
